Welcome to ANT 105 Introduction to Anthropology!  The textbook for this class will be Kottak's Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity, 13th edition, although the 12th edition of the same textbook will be fine.  The first day of class will be Thursday, August 20 at 11:00 AM, in SB room 210.  See you there!

Tuesday, November 17 we will talk about urbanization and inequality.  Please read chapter 11 in Kottak.

Thursday, November 19 we will talk about first contact and when cultures meet.  There is no reading for today.

 

Tuesday, November 24  we will watch another film, this one on first contact between cultures, and do an exercise.  Please read chapter 23 in your textbook.

 

Tuesday, December 1 is our last day of class!  We will talk about Archaeology, Anthropology, and Politics, and will have a brief review session for our 3rd exam. 

 

In class on Thursday, November 12, we watched a video:  Out of the Past: Power, Prestige, and Wealth.  It is on reserve at the library, call # CC165.O976 1993 pt. 5-6.  If you missed it, please be sure to watch it!!

For 5 points bonus, find an example of doublespeak in print or broadcast media.  Analyze it in an essay of at least 1 paragraph--what were the authors (or speakers) trying to accomplish?  What type of doublespeak did they utilize?  Was it effective?  Why or why not?  How can it be detected as doublespeak by the alert reader or listener?
