Prerequisites: Introduction to Sociology (SOC 105)

Course Description: This course will provide an overview of applied sociology. Drawing primarily on class discussions, students will learn how to apply sociological concepts, theories, and research methods to solve real-life questions and problems. The contexts in which these questions and problems will occur include, but are not limited to, inequality, education, business, religion, government, social service agencies, health care, aging and assisted living, criminal justice, and civic groups. We will pay particular attention to issues of social change, but will also cover more specific client-based questions and problems. The primary goals are to prepare you to 1) complete a practicum in sociology, should you choose to do so, and 2) identify and obtain a job upon graduation.

Attendance: Not collected, but it will be impossible to pass the class without regular attendance.

Participation: What you get out of this course depends on what you put into it. To that end, I expect you to come to class prepared to discuss the readings and topics we are covering. Participation will be worth 25% of your final grade.

Cheating: I expect students to uphold the UNCW Academic Honesty Policy. If a student breaks this policy, I will follow the procedures identified in the Student Handbook and Code of Student Life.

Assignments and Projects: Your main project is to produce a practicum proposal, worth 50% of your grade. To that end, throughout the semester, you will turn in draft sections of your proposal for review and revision. Using Power Point, you will present all assignments in class.
