The Philip Furia Fellowship in Creative Writing is hereby created as a named endowment fund within the Endowment of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  The scholarship is being created in memory of Philip Furia, a beloved professor in the creative writing department who wrote many books of nonfiction, and in his spirit the ideal candidate should have an outward focus in his or her work, with an emphasis on research.  The scholarship will be used to assist students pursuing a degree offered by the Department of Creative Writing, in the Master of Fine Arts program.

Criteria

The scholarship is considered a merit scholarship and the recipient will be selected on demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. It is the intent of the donor that the award be given to a graduate student in creative nonfiction whose work is biographical or in other ways researched as opposed to personl in nature. When selecting a recipient, consideration should be given to a student’s availability of resources and support for pursuing a graduate degree.  The recipient must have been accepted for admission to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and be interested in pursuing a degree offered by the Department of Creative Writing in the Master of Fine Arts program.  The scholarship may be awarded to graduate students.  The scholarship may be renewed for returning students at the discretion of the award authority, provided they continue to meet the award criteria.
