4   Classroom Activities, Tests and Grading

Class discussions. Click here for the semester schedule.

You, along with a partner (or two), will be assigned to lead one classroom discussion during the semester. The student pairings and topic assignments will be finalized during the first week of class. In order to prepare to lead a discussion, you MUST do the following :

Read the assigned material very carefully.

Prepare a set of Power Point slides that you would use if you were presenting the material to an audience. The slides can be very simple; no animation, graphics, etc need be used. Plan on spending  25-30 minutes on the presentation, leaving enough time for a discussion .  Here are some presentation guidelines.

Find at least three recent news items (within the last 12 months) related to your topic. Read the articles so that you understand them, and then weave the articles into your presentation. You can access a vast array of electronic resources such as  Lexis-Nexis and EBSCOhost through our library.

Email both your Power Point slides and the links to the articles as email attachments to narayans@uncw.edu. You must do this by 8:00 AM Wednesday, the week before you are scheduled to lead the discussion. This allows me time to contact you and give you some feedback, if the need arises.

Actively lead the discussion in class.

Tests

Grading

Course grade: A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79 etc. The upper and lower 30% of all grade ranges (except the A range) will be assigned + and - modifiers, respectively.

5   Students With Disabilities

If you have a disability and need reasonable accomodation in this course, you should inform the instructor of this fact in writing within the first week of class or as soon as possible. If you have not already done so, you must register with the Office of Disability Services in Westside Hall (extension 3746) and obtain a copy of your Accomodation Letter. You should then meet with your instructor to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of the Accomodation Letter.
