  Special Topics in Advanced Biology: Environmental Education

  • Course Description: Bio 585-02 is a three credit graduate-level course focusing on local, state and national environmental issues and appropriate strategies for introducing these issues to pre-college students. Topics include: endangered species, habitat integrity, human ecology, land use, air and water quality, waste management, and environmental policy.
    Meeting Place: Randall Library Distance Learning Center (2nd floor), on Wednesday evening from 5:00-8:00 PM.

    Instructional Approach: This course is a joint effort of UNCW, NCSU, ECU and UNC-Charlotte and will make use of the NC Telecommunications Network using uplink/downlink and WEB-based technologies, enabling students to interact with each other and a series of eminent environmental scientists and science educators.

    Assessment: Grades will be assigned on the basis of a final examination, a classroom-based research project and class participation. The final examination will be given during the final exam period (100 points); a written report describing the rationale, methods, analysis, and results of the research project is due on the last day of class (100 points); participation and interaction with other students and presenters is a central aspect of the course (100 points).

    Research Project: The research project will be a collaborative effort that introduces students to the use of the World Wide Web as a resource for environmental education, encourages implementation of new teaching strategies in elementary and secondary school classrooms, and suggests ways of evaluating the success of the new strategies.
