Steven L. MillerPersonal StatementSteven Miller is a Research Professor at UNCW’s Center for Marine Science. He directed UNCW’s National Undersea Research Center from 1998 to 2004. Before that, he developed and directed the center’s coral reef science program in the Florida Keys starting in 1991, including the Aquarius underwater laboratory. Dr. Miller is currently involved in research to understand factors affecting the condition of coral reefs in Florida. He maintains a long-term oceanographic monitoring program and is working collaboratively with AOML to install a real-time ocean observing system in the Florida Keys. Additional research projects address issues related to water quality and acoustic tracking of fish. He is a founding member of the Shifting Baselines Ocean Media Campaign, a marriage of Hollywood and science to create entertaining products that attract public attention, reach new demographics, and highlight ocean issues to advance important policy needs. Dr. Miller is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has a B.A. in Biology from Brown University and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He works and lives in Key Largo, Florida, with his wife Tonia Sledd (a quilter). They have two children, Jonathan (19) and Andrew (16). In his spare time he likes to fly fish and race cars.
