HST 101, Western Civilization I

The West has influenced the world in many ways.  Modern industry and technology, capitalism, and many prominent political and religious creeds are the products of the history of the west.  As we grow nearer to achieving a global culture, many western ideas and practices have also been adopted or forced upon peoples across the globe.  These cultures, in their turn, have come to influence the continuing development of western culture.

In History 101, we will look at the origins of many of these developments.  We will examine Hebrew and early Christian traditions.  We will see the development of the rule of law, and the origins of several recurrent political ideologies.  We will witness the rise of commercial capitalism and the coincident spread of European influence throughout much of the world.
