Focus on systems, communication, aesthetic and learning theories applicable to designing instructional products. Provides an overview of multimedia strategies and tactics using multimedia and instructional communication. Each student will demonstrate basic proficiencies across a wide spectrum of multimedia. Emphasis will be on visual, audio and typographic design as well as the appropriateness of these solutions for specific instructional goals. The use of advanced electronic technologies will also be emphasized.
The research base for the course exists in cognitive learning theory, perception, motivation, color principles, communication, usability, multimedia learning principles and instructional design applicable to designing multimedia instructional products. The course provides an overview of multimedia learning principles and development strategies. Students will learn to specify requirements, design, develop, and evaluate multimedia applications.
In this course, each student will demonstrate basic proficiencies across a wide spectrum of multimedia including Adobe Indesign/MicrosoftPublisher, Adobe Captivate, Adobe Photoshop/Fireworks, and Adobe Dreamweaver. Emphasis will be on visual, audio and typographic design as well as the appropriateness of these solutions for specific instructional goals. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary theories of multimedia development culminating in a personalized theoretical basis for use and development of multimedia products.
Florence Martin is an Assistant Professor in Instructional Technology at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. She has a doctorate degree in educational technology from Arizona State University. She has worked with University of Phoenix, Cisco Learning Institute, Intel and Arizona State University and has expertise in instructional design, performance technology, corporate training and distance learning. She is interested in the research areas of instructional elements, multimedia design and development, performance improvement, and digital visual literacy.

We will participate on Horizon Wimba for most of the sessions. We will meet in EB 337 for the face to face sessions. The face to face sessions will also be delivered online for those who cannot make it to campus.
