Benthic Boundary Layer Studies

This project is an interdisciplinary, multi-year program designed to examine storm-driven sediment and biota dynamics on the continental shelf in the South Atlantic Bight -- an area frequently traversed by both tropical and extratropical storm systems.  Two study sites have been established in Onslow Bay, NC.  The first site is located approximately 27 miles offshore and is adjacent to a hardbottom.  Data collection efforts at this site were undertaken in 2000.   The second site is located on the inner shelf approximately 5 miles offshore. Data collection efforts at this site began in summer 2002.  Eulerian measures of water column flow properties, near bed velocity profiles and sediment resuspension are collected using instrument packages continuously deployed on the seafloor at both sites. These data are coupled with detailed geological information obtained from sediment grabs, boxcores and side scan sonar surveys collected during scheduled and "event-determined" cruises.  Physical and geological sampling efforts are coordinated with synoptic measures of chlorophyll a, monthly and "event-dependent" benthic surveys, and the sampling efforts of other research groups.
