The Rate of a Chemical Reaction

Purpose:

To model the kinetics of a first order chemical reaction.

Description:

A color dye solution is bleached. The rate of the chemical reaction is monitored by an MBL light probe, which is used to measure the intensity of a light beam passing through the solution. MBL explorer software is used to obtain a graph of absorbance vs. time. Analysis of the data leads to an exponential model for the rate of the reaction.

Materials Needed:

• MBL with light probe.
• 100 ml of bromocresol green solution.
• 25 ml of pH-7.
• One small vial.
• One flashlight.
• A piece of tissue paper.
• One eyedropper.
• One clamp rod and several fork-clamps.
