TRANSIENT STUDY INFORMATION
1. Basic Rules for Meeting:
A.I have office hours (Leutze Hall 282) every day (frequently around 2 pm)during regular semester sessions; these areposted every semester on my office door. I will make myself available at other times upon request. You may have to be patient at times, as I have advisees, my own students, meetings, faculty senate, professional conferences, or other limitations to immediate availability, including possible emergencies or sickness.
B. My e-mail is lapairep@uncw.edu. I always check my email several times a day and I always answer messages. Please do respond and confirm proposed meeting times. My office phone number is: 910-962-3825.
C.If you make an appointment, whether by signing up or email, please do come or do let me know if you cannot come, it is both courteous and efficient: someone else can then be taken care of, and, when you do come back to see me, we’ll both be happier.
D. I see approximately 120 to 150 students a year just for transient study forms in foreign languages; I also have my own students and other responsibilities. During busy times, I cannot take care of every last-minute form or problem in that one last minute.
2. Processing the Form:
A. Please have the (FOREIGN / INTERNATIONAL -- not the "DOMESTIC") TRANSIENT STUDY form with you before you come see me – get it from the Office of International Programs (OIP)in Westside Hall and see the study-abroad personnel there before seeing me. I do not have those forms, and I do not know every program abroad; OIP is there to guide you and help you decide which programs and which courses fit your needs. I can advise you, if needed, as last recourse, once you have narrowed your choice of potential courses, but the left part of the form is mostly yours in consultation with OIP to fill in ( I do the right part -- UNCW equivalencies).
B. Know which foreign language courses you took so far at UNCW and which ones you want or need to takeat UNCWafter your time abroad; otherwise, a wrong equivalency means that the registrar’s office computer program will block you from registering later for a course which it believes you have already taken abroad.
C. Know which courses you wish to take while abroad and, if possible, their numbers and discipline (for instance: espa, lit, lang, hist, art, socio, anthro, EPE, ESP, etc.) at the other institution. I will help as much as I can, but Ido not and cannot know every course at every institution in every country (thanks for thinking I could).
D. I cannot give UNCW equivalency for courses other than foreign languages. You must see the appropriate department for UNCW credit in disciplines other than foreign languages.
E.Often, we will meet again after your return to redo an evaluation of your final, exact coursework abroad. (You are not expected to know right now all the possible choices offered abroadseveral months from now).
F. You do need to have a TRANSIENT STUDY FORM filled BEFORE you go abroad to maintain your status as an active student, to receive financial aid (if applicable) for your program abroad, for insurance purposes, for the registrar's office to know that you will be bringing course credit from abroad, and because once OIP or the registrar's office receives your foreign transcripts, UNCW equivalencies can be posted immediately if all is well.
I look forward to working with you and for you on thisunequalled learning and growing experience.
