A little bit about myself...

I am originally from this area, but have not spent my whole life here. I grew up in the ‘lesser metropolitan area’ of Burgaw, out in the country on my family’s farm. I have 2 older sisters and a younger brother, all of whom live in this area still. My parents lived together happily for over 50 years, until my father’s death in 2002.

My educational background includes study at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC, and numerous workshops, conferences, trainings, etc. in the years since my BA. I began interpreter training with the director of Hearing Impaired Services while at Lenoir-Rhyne and have been ‘training’ pretty much ever since! That is part of my deepest desire, to be an interpreter. After graduating, I taught school in Georgia, Hawaii, and NC.

I began working at UNCW in the Department of Disability Services in 1995 after moving back to this area. I interpreted for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students for a few years and then was approached by the Dept. of Communication Studies about teaching a class. WOW! What a thrill that would be. It has been so very rewarding to me personally and professionally. I have seen an interest in students for more out of their academic career than just to “learn and regurgitate”. The classes I teach seem to spark interests in people and personalities that otherwise would be tolerated or ignored in general. That really spurs me on!

My family now includes my first husband, 4 children, from college to elementary school, a cat, a hamster, and a wealth of plants! We have home-schooled all of our children up to various ages/levels, and still have the 2 younger ones at home. I love to dance (ballet and creative movement), sew, workout, hangout with my family, camp, and go to the beach. It’s a never-ending adventure around our house, and I guess I wouldn’t want any other plan!
