Degree Requirements

The Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees require a total of 30 semester hours of graduate work in the mathematics and statistics. Each student must select one of the following plans:

 A.   Thesis Plan

Each student must present a thesis, MAT 599 (4), acceptable to the advisory committee, prior to graduation.  The student will report orally on the thesis to a general audience.

 B.   Non-thesis Plan

    Each student must complete a research project, MAT 596 (1), and must successfully complete a written comprehensive examination.

 Course Requirements

  1. Graduate Research Seminar, MAT 595 (2)
  2. Either Real Analysis I, II MAT 511-512 (3-3)  or  Applied Analytical Methods I, II  MAT 518-519 (3-3)
  3. Either Modern Algebra I, II MAT 541-542 (3-3) or Linear Programming MAT 535 (3) and Discrete Optimization MAT 536 (3)
  4. For the M.S. degree: two courses selected from:  Numerical Analysis MAT (CSC) 525 (3), Applied Probability MAT (STT) 565 (3), and/or any one statistics course.
