Numerals and Numbers

Japanese number have to be accompanied with "counters," which changes by shape, size, and quality/nature of an item/animal/people. 

For examples:

In counting a thin flat object One (ticket, sheets of paper, etc. ) =いちまい

In counting a machine             One (car, train, sewing machine, etc.) =  いちだい

In mentioning time                  One (o’clock) = いちじ

In mentioning minutes            One minute = いっぷん　two minutes = にふん etc.

How to express number (amount) in a senctences

Number comes after a "noun+particle" unit.  It is opposite of English phrase. 

E.g.　Please give me two sandwiches = サンドイッチを ふたつ　ください.

 We have three cards an my household.  うちには　くるまが　さんだい　あります.

 

Numerals

(Numerals, for example, in the phone numbers, yearls, age, etc. are written in the Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) in Japan.  We do not use Kanji for numbers unless it is a price in officail documents or some text written in traditinal vertical way.)

 Note: 1.Zero is Ree or Zero.  2.The native Japanese system exists for 1 through 10 only.  After 11, only the Sino-system can be used.

Area Code in Japan starts with Zero.

Note:  If you have a Japanese phone number, starting with zero, and you try to call from the U.S., take zero out and dial the number.

E.g.  022-555-4444  Dial (calling from the U.S.) 011- 81-22-555-4444.

If you are in Japan and make a long distance call, you have to dial zero.
