Summer 2019, JPN294-700 Course Calendar

The course starts on May 20th, 2019. (The first mandatory meeting at 10:00 a.m.)
All the assignments and tests must be completed by the time and dates set below.
I will be on the trip to Japan on June11-12 so I cannot be reached during these days. I will be at the hotel in Tokyo by 3 p.m. on June 14th.
Study Abroad in Japan from June 14th through June 23rd.  The program/course ends right after the farewell dinner on June 23rd.
All the "assignments in Japan" must be submitted as indicated in the calendar below. (Please see the "Requirements" for more details in the syllabus.)
Note 1: Generally, if you have completed 7 or more credits of Japanese language course(s)  at a university (or equivalent) , you are considered "Intermediate level." 
All the assignments have to be done according to your pre-determined level. (Please consult with Kano-sensei to determine your level if you are not sure. )
Note 2: If you are taking the course on-line "A thick black marker pen and paper" or "a white board and pen" to write and show me your stroke orders of writing letters and characters that are assigned in each chapter.Note:3: You can take the test prior to the test dates below upon consultation with the instructor.  However, if the test  date is delayed, a penalty point (10 points per business day) will be subtracted from your test score.Note:4: AFTER the completion of all the assignments of a chapter,  the chapter test(s) can be taken.
Note:5: If you do not complete all the assignments before the test date, that is considered delaying a test.  
Note 6: You can postpone only one chapter test out of all chapter tests (10 points penalty off of the test grade applies if the test date is delayed).  You can postpone one test but has to complete a test within three days from the original  test date or you will receive zero for the test. Note 7: All the tests must be completed before the last class meeting on June 6, 2019.

Note:8: All the writing assignments in this course have to be hand-written and double spaced.
Note 9:  It is required to have an access to a scanner or an app (such as Genius Scan) to create PDF of your assignments. 
Note 10:  Mandatory class meetings are as indicated below.
Note 11: Prepare a medium-size notebook (a travel journal size) to use in Japan to take it with you everywhere for your journal writings and taking notes on the way of your adventure!  You can include your 5min. presentations at the last day of the program so that everything your need will be in the notebook.=
Note 12:  Use Google Drive to turn in assignments. The invitation is sent to your e-mail.

Writing Assignment: Review Verbs and write what you can say at the following situation:
On the first day of the trip, when you are riding a bus, a lady started talking to you.
Tell her why you are in Japan and what you are going to do during the trip (refer to the itinerary).
Turn it in to the Google Drive by 8:00 a.m. Change/save the file name to "Our Plan."
Practice the dialogue withs the video in the Chapter 3 and practice on your own.

Presenting your Chapter 6 Kanji mnemonics (See my e-mail sent on May 30 about how to submit)
Beginner's level learns the dialogues 1, 2, 3 and 4. Intermeidate level learn all the dilagolues (1 through 5).
Be sure to read all the notes in the chapter 6 to understand the transportation system.

The followings are assignments in Japan:  Please save them in your folder in the Google Drive to turn in at the meeting on the last day in Japan.  I will download the folders to my computer and return the flash drive at the meeting.

1. Audio Recordings in Japanese  A) at a flea market;  B) at a restaurant ;  C) at a fast food;  D) at a town or Train station (Chapter 6);  E) at other situations
All the recordings have to be done by one person.  No group recordings, please.

2. Kanji and Word Hunting in Japan; Take photos of Kanji (at least 20 images); Katakana words (at least 20 images); Jinglish (at least 10 images)

3. Your Power Point in English (due at the Farewell/Sayonara party) to reflect your learning in Japan:  Short essay written in the note section of each slides in English, explaining your experiences  at least including the followings.
        - Something surprising, impressive, disappointing, and frustrating;
        - something you have learned in Japan and want to adopt it to your life back in the US;
        - your culture shock/adjustment; and
        - if you come back to Japan again, where would you like to go and what you want to do.
