Start with greetings such as:  こんにちはおひさしぶりですね or はじめまして。　よろしく　おねがいします。

What is "---(a noun word)"  ?     Could you write (in chat) in Japanese?            "---(a noun word)" とは　何ですか？　(チャットに if the site has the CHAT function)日本語で書いてください。

Please nod or repond to their answers saying あ、そうですか (I see)。　本当ですか(really?)。　へーえ、おもしろいですね (interesting)。Also, use "Echo" questions (noun + です  か or ね） to acknowledge/show that you are listening.
