Phi Eta Sigma is a National Honor Society. It recognizes and encourages academic excellence in all disciplines. Membership is open to students who have an average of 3.7 or higher with no grade lower than "C" on a minimum 30 hours during their freshman year. Phi Eta Sigma is the oldest and largest such honor society at UNCW and in the nation. It was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923 and now has more than 300 chapters nationwide with over a half-million members. Phi Eta Sigma has been a member of the Association of College Honor Societies since 1937. The UNCW chapter was chartered on March 17, 1979.

Dr. Lee Johnston serves as the ermeritus advisor for the UNCW chapter; Dr. John Brennan is the faculty advisor. Invitations for membership are extended in May of each year for rising sophomores. Inductions are held the Saturday of Fall Parents' Weekend.

Recent UNCW national scholarship honorees include: Brandi Given (1998-1999), Jill Peters (1999-2000), Nicole Dusenberry (2000-2001), and Jackie Roberts (2001-2002).
