WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT STUDYING ABROAD

My name is Mike Kane and I am a current senior and Spanish major at UNCW.
I have traveled to many spanish speaking countries throughout the past five years, but Spain was by far one of my favorites. I spent just over a month in this wonderful country and was able to visit Madrid, Malaga and also Granada. My trip to Spain changed my whole outlook on the spanish language and is one of the main reasons why I continue to study it to this very day. I am planning on returning to Spain in the fall to visit a few friends and I am super excited! I would recommend anyone who likes to speak spanish, travel, or just likes new experiences to go to Spain because you won’t be disappointed.

The Ubeda program is created to give students the opportunity to improve and practice Spanish intensively while emerging themselves in the Spanish culture. Students will gain a rich knowledge and understanding of the cultures of Spain while traveling to different areas of the country, and most importantly by living and sharing with a local family.

Your wonderful adventure begins right here on campus with a 2 day orientation.  We will talk about the do’s and don’ts of the culture in order to help you maximize your experience. We will talk about the places we are going to visit and the courses you are going to take.

Our next stop will be SAFA, our host school.  It is located right in the heart of Ubeda and it is a wonderful example of 16th century architecture.  We will have class Monday though Thursday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Followed by afternoon excursions to local museums and attractions.  On weekends we will take trips to other cities such as Granada, Jaén,  Córdoba, Seville and Toledo.
We will also have contact with nature and have wonderful adventures hiking and canyon exploring at Carzorla National Park.  We will spend the last week of the program exploring Madrid's wonderful museums, art, theaters, tapas bars, cafés, night life, etc.

Plaza Vásquez, Baeza Carzola National Park La Alhambra, Granada Gothic Cathedral, Seville

Students will stay with local families in the comfort and charm of Ubeda.

ABOUT UBEDA & SAFA

Located in Andalucía, (southern Spain) Ubeda has been declared a World Historic site by UNESCO.  It is also, conveniently located  close to other renowned cities and historical attractions such as Granada, Sevilla, Cádiz and Valencia,  among others.
Ubeda has also already  hosted 3 other UNCW very successful programs in the past.

Ubeda sits on a ridge overlooking the olive groves of the Guadalquivir valley and is a wonderfully pure example of a Renaissance town. Some of the best architecture from 16th Century Spain can be found here. The town plaza lies in the heart of the Zona Monumental and is the prime place to enjoy Ubeda's beautiful architecture.
