Issue Memo Assignments
Directions:
Over the course of the semester we will discuss 6 controversial policy issues.   I will take your best 5 of 6 grades on these assignments.  Each of these readings is designed to help you explore the various theories and concepts discussed in the readings and lectures.  Each assignment is a little different so be sure to follow the directions.  You can find the directions for each assignment by clicking on the appropriate link.  Each web page has links to other resources to help complete the assignments as well.

bulletMemo Assignment #1Should the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Be Opened to Oil Drilling?
bulletMemo Assignment #2: Should the United States Stop Planning for Permanent Nuclear Waste Disposal at yucca Mountain?
bulletMemo assignment #3: Is Human Activity Responsible for Global Warming?
bullet Memo Assignment #4: Does Commercial Fishing Have a Future?
bulletMemo Assignment #5: Is it Time to Revive Nuclear Power?
bulletMemo Assignment #6: Is Global Warming a Catastrophe That Warrants Immediate Action?

Each reading contains arguments for and against each policy proposal.  Based on these and other class readings, handouts, lecture notes, guest speakers, videos, and other web sites, each assignments will generally require that you develop an argument for or against a specific policy proposal.  You should be prepared in class to discuss your proposals and the points made by the authors in each reading.

Written Assignments
Generally, your writing assignments will take the form of a memo.  In some cases, you may be asked to write your analysis in another form such as a letter, opinion editorial, or testimony and comments on a proposed project.  Each memo is limited to 2 single-spaced, 12 point font pages, with 1 inch margins and must be in a standard memo format.  The reason that a memo format is required is that it is the standard means of communication in the world of business and government.  Thus, these memo assignments will help you to develop your ability to analyze policy questions and to think, act, and communicate more effectively about environmental issues and problems.

Grading
You must do at least 5 assignments.  However, you are expected to prepare all 7 memos and I will take your best 5 of  6 grades.  Each memo should answer the question posed and be argumentative in nature.  There is no one "right" answer.  Instead, you will be graded on the strength and organization of your arguments as well as the quality of your writing.  You may introduce any facts and evidence you wish to support your arguments.  If you are unfamiliar with how to write a memo please arrange to see me or my graduate assistant during office hours for assistance.
