Part 5: Performance
Evaluation |
|
Objectives: |
This is a short
assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to: |
|
| Introduce
you to the concepts and practices of performance
evaluation |
| Provide
you with an opportunity to see how these concepts
are (or are not) applied to individuals in an actual
organization |
| Practice
applying the terms and concepts covered in the
reading |
|
Determine the extent to which
the best practices described in the readings are used in local
organizations. |
|
Allow you to compare the
performance appraisal and performance measurement techniques practiced
in this organization to other organizations you have worked for |
|
|
Directions |
During your interview, ask the respondent to describe how
their performance is assessed over the course of the year and their
perceptions about how useful the feed back is that they get and how accurate
the appraisals are at measuring their job performance. You should also
explore whether the performance appraisals are used to motivate employees
and whether these performance measurement systems work in practice.
Look back at the job analysis, does the performance appraisal/measurement
process capture all of the important tasks identified during this
assignment. If
your respondent is involved in conducting performance appraisals or
measuring the performance of other employees, ask them to describe the
process and its potential problems and pitfalls. Finally, ask the
respondent to comment on the various things that impact their performance
other than their motivation. The lecture notes
and readings will provide some
guidance for what to look for and ask about during your
interview. Ask for copies of their
performance appraisal forms to share with the class as well. |
|
Presentation |
Each group will be asked to share the results of your analysis
and share examples with the class during a brief 5 minute presentation. This will count towards your
class participation grade. |
|
Writing
Assignment |
Each
group should prepare one memo for the group that
describes the performance appraisal process for
this individual and their organization. Your memo is limited to 3-single-spaced pages with 12
point font and 1 inch margins. Your
analysis should summarize the performance appraisal process in
this organization and its strengths and weaknesses based on the information
gleaned from your interview. You should also make recommendations for
improving the performance appraisal process based on what you have learned
in the readings for this and other classes. |
