Part 4: Compensation
  
Objectives:
This is a short assignment.  The purpose of this assignment is to:
  
bullet Allow you to link motivation theories and concepts to the readings on salaries and benefits
bulletProvide you with an opportunity to see how different types of salaries and benefits motivate employees
bullet Explore whether public employees are "paid" better than their nonprofit and private sector counterparts
bullet Determine the extent to which the best practices described in the readings are used in local organizations.
bullet Allow you to compare the salary and benefit packages available in this organization to other organizations you have worked for
  
Directions
During your interview, you should ask the respondent about their salary and benefit packages and which aspects are the most important to the employee in terms of accepting their job with the organization as well as those aspects that are most closely linked with their job satisfaction (or dissatisfaction).  You should also learn about the overall structure and operation of the salary and benefit system and whether.  You should also explore the other factors that motivate their performance.  The lecture notes and readings will provide some guidance for what to look for and ask about during your interviewFinally, you should compare the salary and benefit packages for this employee to other comparable jobs in the public, private, and nonprofit sector.  Be advised that this may be difficult information to obtain in the nonprofit and private sector.  Ata minimum, you should compare the respondents benefits to those provided to comparable employees in comparable public organizations.
   
Presentation
Each group will be asked to share the results of your analysis and share examples with the class during a brief 5 minute presentation.  This will count towards your class participation grade.
  
Writing Assignment
Each group should prepare one memo for the group that describes the compensation system in this organization.  Your memo is limited to 3-single-spaced pages with 12 point font and 1 inch margins.  Your analysis should describe the respondent's salary and benefit package, the organization's compensation system, and  comment on how the compensation system for this individual compares with public, private, and nonprofit sector counter parts.  You analysis should also describe how various elements of the compensation package serve to motivate the employee and contribute to their job satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) and help or hinder in recruitment efforts.
