Part 1: Job Analysis
  
Objectives:
This is a short assignment.  The purpose of this assignment is to:
  
bulletIntroduce you to the concepts and practices of job analysis while providing an opportunity to see how these concepts are applied to actual jobs
bullet Learn how to write a good job description
bullet Determine the extent to which the best practices described in the readings are used in local organizations.
  
Directions
During your interview, ask the respondent to describe their job in terms of the tasks they perform and the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) needed to perform the tasks.  You should also ask them about the relative amount of time spent on different tasks and the importance of various tasks to the organization.  You may also want to ask about training and human resource development needs for their position.  The lecture notes and readings will provide some guidance for what to look for and ask about during your interviewYou must also obtain copies of their actual job description for inclusion in your written assignment and to share with the class.  You should compare the information from the interview with the job description and see whether it is accurate. 
   
Presentation
Each group will be asked to share the results of your analysis and share examples with the class during a brief 5 minute presentation.  This will count towards your class participation grade.
  
Writing Assignment
Each group should prepare one memo for the group that describes the results of your job analysis.  Your memo is limited to 3-single-spaced pages with 12 point font and 1 inch margins.  Your analysis should summarize your job analysis and critique of the current job description.  You should also make recommendations for improving the current job description by re-writing it based on the advice offered in the readings.  You should attach the current job description and a re-written job description as part of this assignment.
