My primary research interests center on the ecological and geologic processes on barrier islands and beaches in the southeastern United States. Research activities include the impact of hurricanes and other storms on the morphology and vegetation of barrier islands, including changes in shoreline position, inlets, and dune morphology (overwash). Other investigations have been directed at determining the impact of off-road vehicles on coastal environments in North Carolina. Current interests are focused on changes in estuarine marshes in response to sealevel rise and the ecology of coastal dune slacks, maritime forests, strandline plants, and seed banks in coastal environments.
