Vignette
Presentation
Objective: The vignette is a learning tool that is designed to present information to the entire class on a narrowly defined topic in the area of coastal management. The exercise involves selecting a topic, researching the topic followed by a brief oral presentation and the development of a short manuscript presenting the information contained in the vignette presentation.
Methodology:
1. Select a topic that interests you in the area of coastal management. It may involve an actual or potential problem, a management issue, analysis of an event, etc.
2. Briefly research your topic and gain approval for the topic from Dr. Cleary or Dr. Hosier.
3. Extend your research and collect relevant information using books, journals, newspapers, WWW, personal interviews, or other sources.
4. Synthesize your information and prepare a manuscript (four-page limit) summarizing your topic. Depending upon the topic you should present potential solutions, predict the eventual outcome, discuss the appropriateness of an action, etc. Your personal views are important.
5. Complete your manuscript using a standard word processor. Prepare figures and other illustrative material by scanning your images. The UNCW Computer Help Desk (Hoggard Hall, Room 218) or Drs. Cleary/Hosier can help you with your figures. Any figures, tables or other illustrative material that you wish to add does not count in the four-page limit.
6. Prepare for a 3-5 minute presentation of your topic. You must use a computer-assisted presentation technique (such as Powerpoint software). Be prepared to answer questions from the audience. Do not read your manuscript. That will be the "kiss of death" for your presentation.
7. Hand in your typewritten manuscript by the due date indicated. A copy of your manuscript will be made available to each class member through an e-mail attachment.
