Brunswick County resident David
Nash has spent his career as a biologist building a better sea oat, the plant
used to stabilize dunes and prevent erosion, and this week he is being
recognized for his work.
Mr. Nash and five others are being presented with the 2001 Chevron Conservation Award today in Sacramento, Calif.
Besides perfecting the sea oat
cultivation process, Mr. Nash introduced volunteer and educational programs to
protect North Carolina’s 320-mile coastal dune system.
Participants in his dune re-vegetation classes have planted 300,000 sea
oats. Much of his work was done
through his role as an agricultural extension agent with the Brunswick County
Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
Honorees for the Chevron Conservation Awards have been chosen for their abilities to find creative and practical conservation solutions, as well as their ability to bridge widely divergent organizations.
