Maritime forest- closely associated with the immediate coast, maritime forest typically contains live oak, swamp laurel oak, pines (mostly slash and loblolly), red bay, holly, southern magnolia, southern red cedar, cabbage palmetto, yaupon holly and wax myrtle.

Salt Pruning- The tree tops are at an angle, a phenomenon called salt pruning. Salt spray from the ocean limits plant diversity in this ecosystem although dunes and beach shrub communities shield the brunt of spray allowing the growth of trees and shrubs with some salt tolerance.
