Shallotte Inlet on the east end of the island has remained relatively
stable since 1938. However, Ocean Isle is experiencing chronic erosion
adjacent to the inlet. Residents must do all that they can to keep their
dunes and homes from eroding away. Recently, the north end of Ocean Isle
was also privy to beach renourishment to help counteract the erosion. This
is when sediment (sand) from another area is piped onto the beach to
extend it seaward.
