The Town of Oak Island has done a wonderful job of
preserving this area and establishing handicap accessible walkways.
Environmental education signage has been placed along the walkways
throughout the dune field so visitors will learn the importance of this
habitat for plants and animals. Walk from the parking area along the
pathways to the beach and continue westward to the Lockwood Folly Inlet.
While not completely pristine, the West End is one of the few remaining
dune and beach areas where development has been limited. Holden Beach can
be easily seen on the other side of the inlet. Continue walking north
along the inlet and turn east continuing along the waters edge. Here views
of the Atlantic Intracoastal Water Way and the estuary can be found.
Across the estuary are several dredge spoil islands. This area is also
known for its excellent fishing. Kings Lynn Drive ends at this side of the
island. Walking east on Kings Lynn Drive will bring you to a pathway that
crosses the middle of the island and will return you to the parking area. |
