The water, taken from the Cape Fear River, is used to cool the reactors and does not come in contact with radioactive materials. This is the only ocean out-fall in North Carolina where wastewater is dumped into the Atlantic. On a calm day the turbulence created by the out-fall can be seen offshore from the beach access walkovers.
