The water, taken from the Cape Fear River, is used to cool the reactors and
does not come in contact with radioactive materials. This is the only ocean
out-fall in North Carolina where wastewater is dumped into the Atlantic. On a
calm day the turbulence created by the out-fall can be seen offshore from the
beach access walkovers. Fishing boats are often anchored near this location as
it is rumored that the warmer water attracts fish to the area. |
