Salt aerosols  result from the effervescence of seawater caused by breaking waves and are the most important influence on the biota of coastal dune-and-slack ecosystems. Saltwater droplets are concentrated by evaporation, transported inland by wind, and deposited on the windward side of plants. The characteristic bending of trees along the seaward facing dune communities are from the asymmetrical growth of vegetation as a result of the necrosis and death of leaves and twigs associated with salt aerosols. Salt aerosols influence the presence, distribution, morphology, vigor and life history of plant species. shrub.jpg (62496 bytes)
