The Kent Mitchell Nature Trail traverses ¼ mile of salt marsh and
maritime forest communities. One of the more characteristic plants found
on the island is the Sabal Palms (Sabal palmetto). Brunswick County
represents the northernmost area in the United States where palm trees
grow naturally and Bald Head Island has the highest concentration of Sabal
Palms in the county. The presence of palm trees on Bald Head Island gives
it the unique distinction of being known as a sub-tropical island. The
Kent Mitchell Nature trail is also an excellent place to view marsh birds
such as the Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, and White Ibis. |
