The majority of development that is occurring on Bald Head Island is
located on South Beach. This section is four miles long and all the houses
are either oceanfront or oceanview. Bald Head Island remained virtually
undeveloped until the 1970s when Cape Fear Corporation bought the island
and began to sell off lots. As a marketing attempt, they would sell three
lots for the price of one. For approximately $10,000 you could get a
beachfront lot, maritime forest lot, and a marsh view lot. The people who
bought lots here during this time where known as "The Generator
Society" since electricity was not run to the island and everyone had
to use generators. There were also no phone lines so CB radios were used
to communicate with one another. Eventually Bald Head received electricity
and phone connections from underground cables brought through the Cape
Fear River and the island changed owners several times.
In 1983 Bald Head
Island Limited, headed by the George P. Mitchell family, purchased all
undeveloped lots on Bald Head Island and they are still the main
developers. The island is divided into three phases of development. Phase
1 has been completed for several years and it includes all properties from
west beach towards Muscadine Wynd. Phase II is located from Muscadine
toward the Conservancy and this phase is in the middle of construction.
The final phase is located in the forest behind the Cape Fear Point.
Presently, this land is being cleared for future development. |
