The complex of buildings at the end of Federal Road is collectively
known as "Turtle Central" and it is the headquarters of
the Bald Head Island Conservancy.
Turtle Central contains a gift shop, schoolhouse (for educational
programs) dormitory/office building, brick generator building (presently
an information center), and the foundation of the Cape Fear Lighthouse.
Property owners wishing to conserve the natural resources of Bald Head
Island founded the Conservancy in 1983. The Conservancy has grown from a
grassroots program run by volunteers to a structured non-profit
organization with several staff members. The main program of the Bald Head
Island Conservancy is the Sea Turtle Protection Program. From mid-May to
Mid August, undergraduate interns patrol the beaches of Bald Head Island
for nesting loggerhead turtles nightly from 9pm- 6am. Since 1991, all
nesting turtles have been tagged for an on-going research program. |
