For this assignment you will select a mathematician from any period in history before 1600 and write up a biography of that individual. Preferably, if you select a Greek Mathematician, it should be one we did not spend much time discussing. (For example, let's not do Pythagoras, Euclid, et.) Also, it might be preferable to look for mathematicians in non-Western cultures.

Locate several sources including books and journal articles beyond out texts. [Randall Library has many sources. Go to the second floor, take a left and go to the QA20's section.] Note any differences between the sources. In your paper, select and summarize what you have learned. Include an outline of the person's life and a summary of his or her contributions to mathematics, science, and other fields. Who influenced your mathematician and who was influenced by your mathematician? How did your mathematician fit into the historical period? Do not introduce your opinion but provide references to support your story.

Instructions:

1. All work is to be typed in 10 or 12 pt format and double spaced.
2. Your work should be titled in an appropriate way.
3. All pages should be stapled and NOT folded and on standard sized paper.
4. You are expected to write using good grammar and spelling. Your thoughts should be presented in full sentences and you are to group your thoughts into paragraphs.
5. Your facts should be correct and you should reference all work that is not your own. You should use more than one source and at least one text and journal source from the library. Do not simply cut and paste from the Internet!
6. All equations should be typed preferably with the Equation Editor, numbered, referenced as Equation (), off set from text, and punctuated as any part of a sentence.  This should follow the style in your textbooks or articles.
7. Figures should not be too big, should be labeled (Fig. 1, etc) and have captions, and should flow with the text.
8. You should reference work that is not your own, use standard bibliographic style and citation. See a mathematics journal for examples.
9. This is a short paper, at least 5 pages long or about 2500 words.
10. You are not to use generative AI, such as ChatGPT, Bard, Claude II, Llama II, etc.
