Welcome - 1/7/22

Welcome to MAT 325 Computational Mathematics! I hope you had a good break and are ready for the semester to begin. Classes begin Wednesday, January 12th. We will be meeting MWF at 8:00 AM in OS 2009. You should also note that MLK Day is Jan 17th and there is no class. So, we have two short weeks to begin the year.

The course website is at http://people.uncw.edu/hermanr/mat325/index.htm. there you will find the syllabus, tentative schedule, course assignments, and other useful material. I expect to be updating that as we proceed. There is a Canvas page, but it currently only links to these course pages.

I was looking for books to use for the class and settled on two resources

  • Numerical Computing with MATLAB, Cleve Moler, Revised Reprint, 2008.
  • Fundamentals of Numerical Computation, T. A. Driscoll and R. J. Braun

These have online versions which you can find links to on the books page http://people.uncw.edu/hermanr/mat325/Books.htm and on the syllabus. I set up the schedule based on Fundamentals of Numerical Computation and have been going through their materials with the idea to supplement some of it with Moler's book. but we can talk about that more when classes begin.

The goal of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the derivation, analysis, and use of numerical methods to obtain approximate solutions to problems in mathematics. In order to learn the material in this course and earn a good grade, you need to put in some effort. Do not put off assignments or reading. If you do not understand something, ask the instructor (me). Come to office hours, use the email, ask knowledgeable students, or go to the library/internet and find supplementary material. My office is OS 2007J. Assignments will be collected on a regular basis and you will be told when the work is due. To get communication started, you should email me as your first assignment. Tell me how your studies are going, why you are taking this class, what interests you about mathematics, etc.

In the meantime, stay safe and enjoy the last weekend of your break. See you Wednesday!
