Environmental Geology    GLY/EVS 120

Spring 2007

Despite the webpage's meager appearance, students may find some useful information below. If you find a link that isn't working, email me at henryeATuncw.edu (change AT to @).

Class syllabus        Class schedule      (Note, there was a typo in the class schedule posted during the first week of the semester. The case history paper is due at 1 p.m., not 4 p.m., on the due date. The error was corrected in the version that was posted on this website as of 08:45 on 1/17/07).

Homework due Monday April 2 by 5 pm: Everyone should be thinking about, or even working on, their case studies. I would like each student to send me an email telling me what the tentative topic of their case study is. The email must include: 1. What the topic is; 2. One interesting fact about the topic; 3; One reference that you have found with information about the topic; 4. An email subject line that reads "Case Study: 'insert your topic here' ". You can change your topic later (with instructor approval), but I want students to email this information to me now so that I can be sure that everybody has at least started on this project. If you topic is not suitable or if I have some suggestions about your topic I will email you back. If I don't email you back, you can assume that your topic is ok (also assuming that you follow the instructions given on the report for the case study). Also cc yourself on the email you send me so that you can be sure that it was transmitted correctly.

EXAM #4 RESULTS have been posted (5/4/07) here

Comments about the exams: Some students may not have had much experience with multiple choice exams. Here are links to a couple of webpages that provide suggestions about how to prepare for, and take, a multiple choice exam:  webpage1    and webpage2 . You can also find many similar resources on the internet. If you think you could benefit from some additional instruction related to study skills, including multiple choice tests, contact the UNCW University Learning Services office: http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/uls/index.htm or 962-7857.

Slides from lectures. Many of the slides used in lecture are in the files below. WARNING: Material will be covered in class that is not on the slides!!! Coming to class every day is the easiest way to increase your odds of doing well in this class. The password necessary to access the slides is only given out in class, not via email. The password is the same for all chapters.

The slides are available in 3 formats:

1) an adobe file (*.pdf) that has 1 slide per page. The file is too big to fit on a floppy disk. This version is useful if you are viewing the slides on a computer or if you have difficulty reading the text on the smaller slides in the next file format.

2) a pdf file that contains 3 slides per page and is probably small enough to fit onto a floppy disk. Students may want to print this version and take notes on it during class.

2) a pdf file that contains 6 slides per page and is probably small enough to fit onto a floppy disk. Many students like to print this version and take notes on it during class. 6 slides on a page helps save paper.

Only slides for current topics are "active".

There is a website that accompanies the textbook: http://wps.prenhall.com/esm_keller_envgeology_8  There are links on this page to materials for each chapter. The webpages for each chapter have a series of questions under "Understanding the concepts" and "Applying the concepts". These questions may help you review for the test, but are not inclusive of all material that will be on the tests. Students and I have found some errors in the questions. The publisher has corrected the errors we found. Let me know if you think you have found any additional errors.

In addition to taking the online quizzes, you should also review your class notes and read the portions of the book that correspond to the material we discussed in class.
