Prerequisite: Successful completion of SPN 201, or appropriate placement exam score.
Course Description: The course objective is to improve basic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through intensive listening and speaking practice. This course will review the grammar structures presented in 101, 102, and 201. Learning strategies include daily vocabulary and grammar exercises, conversation, discussion of topics related to Spanish and Latin American cultures, and written assignments. The course is conducted in the target language and demands the active participation of each student on a daily basis.
Course Objectives: The instructional goal of this class is to develop communication skills in Spanish with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will practice these four skills by learning about different cultures, making cognitive and social connections during in-class group work, and by completing written assignments. The goal of this course is to prepare students for upper-level coursework in Spanish.

Academic Honor Code: Students in this course are expected to abide by the Academic Honor Code. Please read the Student Handbook and Code of Student Life or more information: http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/doso/code/index.html
Attendance Policy: Given the nature of the course, consistent attendance to class is crucial in order to guarantee success in the class. Each student is allowed three free absences. After missing three classes, five percentage points will be deducted from the final grade for each additional absence. For instance, if you miss five days total, you will have ten points deducted from your final grade. Students participating in university-sponsored events (athletics, conferences, etc.) will be excused as long as they provide documentation of their absence before the event (i.e. schedule of games presented first week of class). There is no way to ‘make up’ an absence, so please keep track of your absences throughout the semester.
Make-up Policy: Homework cannot be made up. It must be submitted to the professor’s mailbox before the end of the class period in which it was due. Exams, quizzes, and the oral test cannot be made up – with the exception being extreme circumstances (i.e. severe illnesses, death of immediate family). However, if you know that you in advance that you will miss a test, arrangements may be made to take the test early according to the discretion of the professor. Compositions turned in late will receive a ten percent deduction for each class day they late with a maximum reduction of forty percent.
Cultural Events:
Each student will attend four cultural events (movie, lecture, festival, etc.) either University-sponsored or in the community. After attending each event, the student will submit a half page reaction paper in Spanish regarding the event. The cultural events must all be completed by the indicated due date and are each worth 10% of the final grade.
Disability Services: If you have a disability and need reasonable accommodations in this course, you should inform the professor of this fact in writing within the first week of class. If you have not done so already, you must register with the UNCW Office of Disability Services. UNCW Disability Services supplies information about disability law, documentation procedures and accommodations. This information can be found at http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/SDS/disability.html.
