Research:
My research
interests focus on the adaptations (physiological, behavioral,
morphological, biochemical) of animals to their environment, with a specific
interest in the thermal, water and metabolic relations of arthropods living
in hot, dry deserts. Research conducted
within this broader area includes (1) comparative studies of cuticular
permeability and the water barrier created by cuticular lipids, (2) correlations
between the molecular composition of cuticular lipids and their barrier
effectiveness, (3) ultrastructural examination of the cuticle with reference
to the location of epicuticular lipids, (4) discontinuous ventilation and
its effect in reducing respiratory transpiration, (5) evaporative cooling
in insects, and (6) flight energetics and transpiration.
