The OST is often characterized as a test for working memory capacity, but research in our lab has shown that rats remember relatively specific features of when and wher eparticular odors were presented--often called episodic-like memory (April, Bruce & Galizio, 2013; Branch, Galizio & Bruce, 2014). We are currently using these procedures to study drug effects on episodic-like remembering and are also studying similar phenomena using a different apparatus the Radial Arm Maze.

The no-bait trial are done as a control to test whether the rat is responding to the odor of the lids, or the scent of the sugar pellet underneath the lids. No-bait are seen when the experimenter is dropping a pellet in after a response.
