Same-different concept learning has been difficult to demonstrate in rodents, but our lab has found that if odor stimuli are used rats can learning generalized identity (Pena, Pitts & Galizio, 2006) and oddity relations (April, Bruce & Galizio, 2011). We are currently conducting research to identify variable that determine emergent same/different concept learning and are also exploring whether other emergent relations, such as symmetry and equivalence, might emerge in rats.
