PED 294: A Cultural Perspective of Sport in Australia
The emphasis of this course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the cultural implications of Sport in Australia. We will look at the origin of Australian sport, its cultural attributes, and how it has become perceived as "a defining characteristic of national identity." Our examination of the affects of sport on Australian culture will be augmented by excursions to the site of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), which has been regarded internationally as a world best practice model for elite athlete development. The course is targeted toward all students who have an interest in understanding sport culture and NO PRIOR SPORT OR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COURSEWORK IS REQUIRED.
REC 294: Leisure and Tourism Study in Australia
The emphasis and focus of this course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of Australia's cultural impacts on leisure participation, with an additional focus on travel and tourism in Australia. We will examine the economic, social, environmental, and cultural impacts of tourism on Australia and examine Australia's use of leisure and recreation activities to market and promote travel and tourism. Students will learn not only in a traditional classroom setting, but also by participating in excursions to some of Australia's most popular tourist destinations, such as the Blue Mountains, Canberra - Australia's capital, Sydney, and other weekly excursions. The course is structured for students interested in the recreation, leisure, or tourism industry and NO PRIOR PARKS AND RECREATION MANAGEMENT COURSES ARE REQUIRED.
