WHY STUDY PORTUGUESE?

Brazil is one of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) of emerging economies.

Spoken by more than 200 million people, it is the 7th most spoken language.

Compare:  German (10th), French (11th), and Italian (15th).

One in three South Americans and one in five Americans speak Portuguese.

Portuguese is the official language of eight countries

in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America.

It is the unofficial language of numerous islands in China, India and North America.

There are over 1.3 million native speakers of Portuguese living in the United States.

Brazil is the tenth largest economy in the world

and features the Amazon jungle, and over 6,000 miles of beaches.

The Portuguese-speaking population of the United States is growing dramatically,

by as much as 20 percent a year in places such as Atlanta, Boston, and Miami.

Half of all US businesses in Latin America are located in Brazil.

A growing number of businesses in the Southeast of the

United States have interests in Brazil.

Since it is rarely studied, its knowledge is a marketable skill,

especially in commerce and banking.
