Pebble Count Procedure

  1. Mark out on the surface of the outcrop an area one meter by one meter.
  2. Sequentially pick up each pebble, cobble that is exposed to the surface at the start of the count and identify it as to lithology and then toss it away from your marked out area. If you can not name it then describe it and possibly keep a reference sample for later use.
  3. When finished tabulate the results and determine the relative percentages.

If you are doing a boulder bed then use a bigger area and chalk an X of the surface of each counted grain.
