Flatbelly Cave

General Location: NW1/4 SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 36 T. 89 N. R. 2 E.

Description: Flatbelley Cave gets its name from the fact that for most of its length the ceiling height is to low to permit a person to do other than slide on their belly in the wet mud. The entrance to the cave is in the wall of a small building stone quarry developed in the Dubuque Member of the Galena Dolomite. Flatbelly had been a mine at one time prior to there having been a quarry there. Inside we found evidence of the miners activity, pick marks. The little quarry in the 1970's was being used as a dumping ground for yard debris and by the mid 1970's the entry way to the cave was totally buried.
