Description: Fizzle Cave is somewhat of a curiosity in that it was a mine much like the hard rock mines of Colorado. Unlike all the other mines in the Dubuque area which followed crevices this one was driven into solid rock, and hand drill and blasted the whole way. Obviously someone had an idea and perused it but they were not successful in finding any valuable minerals. Who ever did this made two mistakes in their exploration logic. First they mainly drove the tunnel parallel to the trend of the crevices or veins in the area; had they driven the workings north-south they might have actually stumbled upon a crevice, there were lots in the area. Secondly they were working at the wrong horizon, a little higher up the hill would have brought then to the level of the principle opening in the area.
