Research Sites

These sites are organized by universities and scholars.  While they are not devoted exclusively to Amazons, they have information immensely valuable to serious research on Amazons.  You may have to learn the ropes carefully because they tend not to present information in easy spoonfuls.

Diotima   A University-run site oriented toward gender issues in antiquity.  It offers a miscellaneous collection of resources, from bibliographies to images to articles on various topics.

Perseus   A vast reserach site by Tufts University.  We work from the Greek and Roman resources section.  It is a repository of classical texts, which can be searched, and also for images or descriptions of images from Museum collections.  Great for primary sources.

The Beazley Archive   A searchable collection of art images, often with detailed descriptions.

The Internet Classics Archive   A searchable, downloadable collection of classical texts, hosted by MIT.

The Greek Mythology Link   A site by Carlos Parada of Brown University.  This is a great source for background information on all figures of Greek mythology.  Search for Amazons under Groups.  The narratives are all from primary sources, but undifferentiated, so we will go beyond what is offered here by semester's end -- but this is a very helpful resource.

Map of the Ancient World   This interactive map allows you to click on regions for a more in depth view, though it's probably better for detail than for an overview.

Center for the Study of Eurasian Nomads    A clearing house of information, popularly accessible, of the nomadic peoples who may have inspired the Greeks in their stories of Amazons.

Popular Sites

These are non-academic sites about Amazons.  Many have helpful information and images; many also have an agenda.  Approach them carefully and judge for yourself what is useful.

Mysteries of Ancient History and Archeology: The Amazons   A large site oriented toward non-professional Amazon researchers who want evidence of real Amazons, with some resources only available to subscribers.

Amazon Women Warriors in Ancient History   A collection of excerpts and comments that provide a helpful introduction to Amazons

The New AmazoNation  "After a five thousand year reign of male icons in the Western World, we have the exhilarating privilege of witnessing a global reappearance of the Divine Feminine. Women will retake their power in the millennium.  Amazons will be in the forefront of this movement."

Ancient History/Amazons  Includes a list of Amazons mentioned in Greek sources and information on Queen Boudicca.

Amazons   A brief introduction on ancient Amazons leads into a discussion of historical women who defied gender boundaries in different ways.

Amazons Unite   Xena fans, with some attention to historical Amazons.  Interesting from a pop culture standpoint.

Student-Authored Sites

These are sites created by students to fulfull university assignments.  So far I have only found individual sites, not sites by a collective like ours, but they still serve as a good model for what can be accomplished by student researchers.

Wild Women: The Amazons, by Elizabeth Snyder, Honors Seminar, Sweetbriar College

Amazon Myths, by Jennifer Taylor, Minnesota State University
