PED 415 Course Requirements

  Attendance:  Students should be present at all class meetings, unless attendance is impossible because of illness or other legitimate reason.  It is assumed that you will make every reasonable effort to attend classes.

Participation:  Participation includes contributing to discussions and activities, sharing our own experiences and materials and asking questions.  Although no specific point value is attached to participation, active involvement in class generally tends to enhance understanding and appreciation of the concepts presented, and to make the course more interesting and worth while. 

  Completion of all assigned readings, as indicated in the course schedule.  Textbook readings should be completed by the assigned date to facilitate class discussion.  Each student will be responsible for discussing assigned chapter objectives.  A one page response to a question posed on the weekly readings will be submitted to the instructor via e-mail.

Examinations:  There will be one comprehensive "project" on material discussed in the required textbook and class lecture.  There may be quizzes (announced and unannounced) during the semester.  Practice quizzes are available on-line in the HPER computer lab.

Off Campus Practicum:  This practicum experience will include a minimum of 20 hours of participation with providers of special services for individuals with disabilities within the community.  This may include Self Contained Public School Classes, Special Olympics, YMCA Adaptive Aquatics, ARC Leisure Service, etc.  The specific requirements of the practicum are provided in a separate document.

  On Campus Practicum:  The practicum will provide a direct hands-on experience working with students with disabilities in the public school system .  The specific requirements of the practicum are provided in a separate document.

  Abstracts:  Readings should be of journal article or book chapter length.  They may be drawn from the references found at the end of each chapter, or from current journal and books.  References should be current, dated no earlier than 1996.  Recommended length of summary:  2 page minimum, typed.  

Book Report:  A book shall be selected and agreed upon by instructor and student.  The topic should be chosen appropriate to PED 415.  A type written report (4 page minimum) shall be submitted as well as an oral report.  

Categorical Presentations:  Students will be assigned to a partner or within a triad to make a written and oral presentation on a specific categorical disability. The specific requirements of the categorical presentations are provided in a separate document

   Equipment Design:  Students will create or modify an existing piece of equipment that could be useful for an individual with a disability.  The specific requirements of the equipment design are provided in a separate document
