The Teaching of Mathematics (K-6)

Ms. Karen Chandler

Online Work (August 30-September 6)

Please complete the following assignments by our next class meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2007.

I.  NCTM Standards and Windows, Dinos and Ants:  Watch the video "Windows, Dinos and Ants."  This video can be accessed from the Annenberg Teaching Math website found at the following URL: http://www.learner.org/resources/series32.html#   Once you access this page, you should scroll down to Video #23 and click on VoD (Video On Demand).  The videotape is about 16 minutes in length.  Before you watch the video, read over the following questions and make notes as you view the video segment.

  1. What other areas of the curriculum are addressed through Mr. Reiley’s lesson on measurement?  Look specifically for examples of the other NCTM content and process standards:

    Content Standards:
Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Data Analysis and Probability

Process Standards:  Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Connections, Communication and Representation

  2. What role does problem solving play in the teaching of measurement concepts?

  3. How does Mr. Reiley use both standard and nonstandard measurement concurrently.

II.  NCTM and NC Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS):  Compare the North Carolina SCOS to the NCTM Standards.  Do the two documents appear to be aligned?  How are they different?  You can access both documents in the EDN 322 Course packet.  The NCTM standards can be found on pp. 39-44 and the NC SCOS on pp. 59-65.

III.  Taking Away By Ones and Twos:  Play the game Taking Away By Ones and Twos several times with another person.  You will need 15 small objects such as buttons, beans or coins.  The directions for playing the game can be found at the following URL: http://people.uncw.edu/hargrovet/322/onestwos.doc

Once you have played the game several times, complete the activities on the "Taking a Closer Look" sheet handed out in class.  Come to class next week prepared to discuss the game and these questions.
