Introduction to
German Literature
MWF 1:00-1:50 PM
Instructor: David
Smith (Assistant Professor of German—252-328-5524) smithdav@ecu.edu
Description: In this
course we will read and discuss a range of texts (parables, aphorisms, fables,
fairy tales, poems, short stories, and a play) by German-language authors such
as Goethe, Kafka, Hesse, Rilke, Nelly Sachs and Christa Wolf.
Because our readings and class discussions will be in
German, this seminar will help you to develop your reading, speaking and
cultural competency in the language while you learn how to interpret various
literary genres. This course seeks also to prepare you for the
upper-division literature and culture classes required for a major or minor in
German.
