Section Theme & The New York Times

"Reading a newspaper each day is perhaps the single most important part of being an informed and educated citizen."

Graham Spanier, President, Penn State University

UNCW is participating in the American Democracy Project, which is a multi-campus initiative that focuses on ways to enhance students' understanding of current issues and inspire civic engagement.  Each Honors 110 instructor has selected a theme to explore in further depth throughout the term.  The topics are all "hot" topics frequently found in the news.  Regularly reading a newspaper, in this case The New York Times, will help you understand and discuss the issues for our theme:  Nature- Nurture.

This is a big topic, and it is very likely that there will be any number of articles related to the theme of nature/nurture… you may find results of studies, opinion pieces, reflections on “old information”.

As you read the paper daily, look for articles on….

At least once a week, write a (minimum one-page) entry in your journal about an article from the New York Times.  Select an article on our theme you find interesting, relevant and useful and summarize the article.  Then tell how it relates to your experience or why you found it interesting.   Feel free to disagree! But back up why you do…

Be sure to label your entry “NYT :  Date of article”.  Be sure to identify the author, source, title, section of the NYT.

In the NYT, special sections each day

Monday:  Main News and Business Day

Tuesday:  Science Times--- likely day for nature nurture!

Wednesday:  Education- likely day for nature nurture! & Dining

Thursday: Circuits/Technology; and House and Home

Friday: Escapes
